Sited in the most visited and the most biodiverse National Park in the country, this project proposes a new building typology and a new mode of experience for visitors in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Rather than a singular visitor center at the park’s entrance that acts as a transition point from civilization into nature, this project proposes a series of decentralized Gathering Centers distributed along Route 441, the main highway through the park. The Gathering Centers are integrated into the park, as their siting and material specification are in direct relation to the natural systems of the park—particularly the many different types of forests—rather than outside of them.
